You might know that the key to SEO is keywords. But you might not know that they are! When I first started learning SEO back in 2014 for the bridal shop I owned, I thought keywords were this elusive, burden of a task.
It turns out that it is incredibly simple! So let’s dive right in and talk all things keywords for wedding pros!
Keywords are the terms you put into Google when searching for something. Keywords allow search engines to figure out what your content is about and if it is relevant.
A keyword is a word that describes the content on your page or post best. It’s the search term that you want to rank for with a certain page.
Also called “search queries.” If you boil everything on your page — all the images, video, copy, etc. — down to simple words and phrases, those are your primary keywords.
You want the keywords on your page to be relevant to what people are searching for so they have a better chance of finding your content among the results.
Here is a great guide by Yoast: https://yoast.com/what-is-a-keyword/
There are three main types of keywords
Short Tail Keywords: 1-3 words
These are also called “head terms”. They have high search volume and high competition. This means that they can generate a large amount of website traffic, but it will take a while to be highly ranked for it.
Medium Tail Keywords: 2-4 words
Often include a city or location.
Long Tail Keywords: 4+ words
These have lower search volume but higher conversion rate. This means that you can rank easier for these search terms. People usually use long-tail keywords to search for something very specific and have a higher purchase intent.
When you type something into Google, you are going to get a list of long-tail keyword suggestions.
One mistake I see wedding pros make is thinking their couples are searching for specific terms that are “industry knowledge.” You might know what a peony is, what a 30″ table is, or what Fine Art Photography means. But your couples most likely do not.
They are not searching for overly specific keywords. They just want to find a venue in Savannah or a wedding photographer in Atlanta.
When it comes to blogging with a keyword strategy, it’s important to change your mindset of the blog post. It’s not just about showing pretty pictures. It’s about answering a question.
If you blog a real wedding, the focused keyword could be the venue where it took place since a common question on google is “XYZ city wedding venue.”
Let’s say you are doing a blog on a Fall wedding in Savannah. The ceremony was at Forsyth Park. The reception was at Charles H Morris Center.
Possible keywords could include:
See how there are multiple options for keywords? The goal would be to focus on one keyword, and implement them organically in your copy. Below is a quick example of how we can include keywords organically! You can see the possible keywords underlined and in bold.
“Justine and Gary’s beautiful fall wedding was a dream to photograph. When picking their venues, they wanted guests to enjoy the incredible squares in Savannah while providing a fun reception indoors to beat the fall heat. For their ceremony, Forsyth Park was a perfect choice. This iconic park is in the heart of Savannah, and guests were able to walk to the ceremony and enjoy the scenery.”
You also need to use a variety of keywords throughout your website. If you just focus on a single keyword, like “Savannah Wedding Photographer” you will be missing out! Couples might also be searching for:
But here is the tricky part: You want to keep the keyword focus of each page on your website to 1-3 keywords max. This way, Google can index your website and understand what you do, who you serve, and where you are located.
This is where blogging comes in! You can touch on all of these keywords without overwhelming Google. Each blog post is a new opportunity to share different keywords!
